Cook County Divorce
Records and Other Public Documents
Cook County divorce records, much as
is the case with many other public documents, are not
known by the general public as being freely available.
A great deal of information about any individual citizen
is available publicly, including information that many
individuals tend to assume is confidential. For instance,
while many realtors advertise that they provide confidential
service to high-end clients, many of those clients don’t
understand that the amount of money the paid for property
is freely available as it is a part of tax policy and,
therefore, the public’s business.
Cook County divorce records fall under the same sort
of regulations. Because a divorce affects the individual’s
tax status, their property ownership and other aspects
of their life that fall under the category of public
information, their divorce records are also public information.
While it may seem that this is the most personal of
all information, there are very good reasons that it
is made available to the public. One should consider,
for a moment, what an individual who was divorced but
never recorded as being so would be able to do without
that information being freely available to all.
The fact that Cook County divorce records are publically
available may make some individuals uncomfortable but
they insulate both parties involved in the divorce from
certain risks. For instance, if it wasn’t public
knowledge that one was divorced, one might be able to
apply for credit products using their former spouse’s
income as part of their application. Of course, this
would also allow such an individual to put their former
spouse’s credit at risk without their former spouse
even knowing. Some information that seems entirely personal
has potential impacts that can affect the lives of other
individuals and thus is made freely available. |
