about the people you meet, and especially about the
people you date, it can be hard to know where to go
for information. Many states have very fragmented listings,
and North Carolina is no exception when it comes to
marriage and divorce records. Fortunately, New Hanover
County divorce records are relatively well organized.
With regards to where such things are kept, there is
one main office that is responsible for the New Hanover
County divorce records. The paperwork is tracked through
the county register of deeds, with is located on 2nd
street. The office is closed for all major government
holidays, but they are available by phone and online.
Some records are even searchable. With New Hanover County

full details of any given case online, but you will

date that the divorce was initiated, and whether or
not it was finalized in accordance with North Carolina
laws.
With all the different people moving in and out of the
area as the beach and tourism economy flexes, out of
state records can be an issue. If possible, you will
want to try and have the states you need to search through
narrowed out before you begin. The Register of Deeds
is going to be the fastest with in state, and particularly
in-county searches for information.
However, even if it takes you a bit longer, the important
thing to remember is that the information you want is
available. You just have to look for it. It isn’t
like the old days, where the only records of a marriage
or divorce might be a paper church record. The information
is stored and just waiting for you to initiate a search! |
